Hispanic/Latinx/Indigenous Awareness Workshop Series 

Sept. 18 – Nov. 2, 2024 – Hybrid Format 

Enhancing Understanding of Hispanic/Latinx/Indigenous People and Cultures: Maya History, Culture and Arts Workshop Series* 

The Maya Textile Exhibit at Cleveland Museum of Art’s Community Arts Center featurestraditional Maya clothing and textiles from highland areas of Guatemala, as well as other cultural artifacts. 

The exhibit opens Aug. 30th and continues through mid-October. 

Teachers can arrange forstudent tours and workshops directly with the Community Art Center. Teachers of Global Education, Arts, Spanish Language, Social Studies, English Language Arts, Multimedia: In this hybrid, interactive series, learn about ancient and contemporary Mayan history, tour an exhibit of Maya textiles and artifacts, engage in a hands-on workshop, tour Cleveland Museum of Art galleries, and participate in Cleveland’s Day of the Dead festivities. 

  • Session 1 – Wed. Sept. 18, 2024 - 4:00-5:30 p.m. Virtual Maya Historical and Cultural Overview 
  • Session 2 – Thurs. Sept. 26, 2024 – 4:00-6:00 p.m. In Person Maya Textile Exhibit and Hands-on workshop CMA Community Art Center, 2937 W. 25 St., Cleveland 
  • Session 3 – Wed. Oct. 23, 2024 -4:00-6:00 p.m. In Person Mesoamerican Galleries Tour, Latinx, Indigenous Arts Cleveland Museum of Art, 11150 East Blvd., Cleveland 
  • Session 4 – Sat. Nov. 2, 2024 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. In Person Day of the Dead Installations and Parade Events Cleveland Public Theatre area, 6205 Detroit Ave., Cleveland 

Presenter: Laura Martin, Ph.D., is a linguist and specialist in Maya culture and languages. She is emerita professor of Linguistics, Spanish, Anthropology, and Health Sciences at Cleveland State University, where she directed the K’inal Winik Mayan Cultural Center. She is a docent at Cleveland Museum of Art, an artist, and a member of Art Books Cleveland. 

*Workshops can be offered in English and Spanish 

Cost: $40 includes educational materials
